J.D.’s Building – 21 Quondola Street

This imposing brick building was erected in 1914 for the Australian Bank of Commerce. After the bank closed its Pambula branch in 1927, it became the offices of the Pambula Co-operative Creamery and Dairy Company. This proved a real boon for the township, with dairy farmers and their families coming to Pambula once a month for shareholder meetings, collecting payments and settling accounts with various local businesses.

While they were in town, these dairy farming families shopped at Pambula’s numerous general stores, butchers, bakeries, frock shop, stationer and chemist, then gathered for a meal in one of the town’s cafes before heading home. The dairy company office had the effect of ensuring dairy farmers kept their custom in Pambula, guaranteeing the town’s commercial viability for many years. The dairy industry continued growing and remains very strong in the Bega Valley today with well-known Bega Cheese flourishing. In the mid 1970s this building was converted into a butchery, which it has remained for almost half a century.
